On May 24, 1961 the Wake Community Lions Club was chartered by a group of 22 men (at the time, women were not allowed to join) to serve the communities located within Wake County, North Carolina.

After hitting a peak membership of over 50 members in the 1970's, the Wake Community Lions is once again over 20 members strong and growing. Our diverse group of men and women - university faculty and state employees, both active and retired - all share a common cause: to assist in providing support and services to the visually impaired community within Wake County in particular, and North Carolina in general. In 1998 we adopted the Governor Morehead Campus as our primary fund-raising and support beneficiary - we support activities by the Governor Morehead School, Governor Morehead Preschool, GMS Outreach, Division of Services for the Blind Adult Rehab., and NCCU's Visual Impairment Training Program..

The Governor Morehead Campus houses the Governor Morehead School for the Blind, established in 1845, the Governor Morehead Preschool, the Division of Services for the Blind, and the NC Central University Visual Impairment Training Program. The Wake Community Lions offers support whenever possible for various activities on the Campus, and makes monetary contributions when needed.
