Admission Requirements: Conditional or Unconditional addmission to the Graduate Program as required by standards currently identified by the NCCU School of Education. Applications for admissions to Graduate Studies may be obtained by contacting Ms. Vonda Bell at 919.530.6478.
Pre-requisites (8):
- EDEC 5620: Introduction to Exceptional Children or equivalent (3)
- EDEC 5624: Seminar in Collaborative IEP Planning or equivalent (2)
- EDEC 5671: Assessment in Special Education or equivalent (3)
Minimum 38 semester hours and a cumulative 3.0 grade point average or higher
Required foundation courses (11):
- EDEC 5501: Introduction to Visual Impairments (3)
- EDEC 5502: Introduction to Braille Code (1)
- EDEC 5601: Structure & Function of the Human Eye / Low Vision (3)
- EDEC 5632: Special Education and Disability Law (3)
- EDEC 5626: Cultural Diversity (1)
Required O&M specialization courses (18):
- EDEC 5603: O&M for the Classroom Teacher (3)
- EDEC 5605: Sensory and Motor Development (3)
- EDEC 5606: O&M Praxis I (3)
- EDEC 5607: O&M Praxis II (3)
- EDEC 5608: O&M for Special Populations (3)
- EDEC 5697: Practicum in O&M / Oral Exam / Written Exam (3)
Required research courses (6):
- EDGR 5910 Introduction to Statistical Method in Education (3) AND
- EDGR 5920 Procedures in Ed Research (3) (Prerequisite EDEC 5910)
OR - EDGR 5915: Statistics Applied to Educational Measurement (3) AND
- EDGR 5925: Applied Research Techniques (3) (Prerequisite EDEC 5915)
Completion of a minimum of 3 hours advanced electives:
- EDEC 5508 Technology for the VI Learner (3)
- EDEC 5609 Special Topic in Visual Impairments (3)
- EDEC 5511 Advanced Low Vision (3)
- EDEC 5512 Introduction to Deafblind / Multihandicaps (3)
- EDEC 5513 Advanced Seminar in Visual Impairments (3)
- EDEC 5695 Professional Practicum (3)
- EDGR 5900 Thesis/Defense (Prerequisites: EDGR 5910 and EDGR 5920)
Successful completion of comprehensive written examination
NOTE: Final certification in Orientation & Mobility (COMS and/or NOMC) is obtained directly from the independent certification agencies (ACVREP and/or NFB) according to their independent standards and guidelines. Typically requirements include transcripts of appropriate coursework, documented supervised internship experience, and the successful completion of national testing. Students are responsible for understanding current certification requirements for the respective certification(s) pursued.
